The Idle Family

Trip To Somalia

A few months ago, I was visiting Somalia for a volunteering program that donated money, food, and clothes to the people that were in need there. Although visiting Somalia might be quite dangerous, we were accompanied by security and translators that were extremely kind to us, and by visiting Somalia, we could experience a whole new lifestyle and learn a lot of new cultures.

Getting Lost!

Anyways, I was going around with my volunteering group when I was suddenly separated and got lost! It was very terrifying because I was alone in a foreign country and had nowhere to go, and I can’t call anyone because my phone had no signal. I was panicking and about to give up when a kind family spotted me and helped me get back to my group.

Introduction

The family who I was talking about is the Idle family, and I was grateful for them helping me, because honestly, without them, I don’t think I would be here right now, writing this blog. The girl who helped me introduced herself as Amina and she’s a street beggar, although it was hard to communicate with the language barrier. Amina led me to her home, where she explained that she had 9 family members, but they were all outside at the moment.

At first, I was suspicious, of course. I was scared and confused about whether I could trust Amina or not, but I followed her anyways because I was starting to feel dehydrated from the heat of the Sun.

Being Saved

Amina led me to her house and apologised for the small space and the dirtiness of the home, but I assured her it’s fine, and she left to get water for me, she came back with a small glass of water, and we talked, before she led me outside to find my volunteering group.

Lesson Learned

While talking, I learned a big lesson from Amina and her family. Amina had to live in a small space with 9 other people, and it taught me to be grateful for what I have, because not everyone gets to be as lucky as me, and I also learned to help more people in need as best as I can. Amina and her family also taught me to be more hardworking and never give up, because even though she had herself and the other 9 family members she needs to support, she never gives up and works hard to be able to provide them with food. When I go back to Indonesia, I will start to help more and more people in need, and join more and more volunteering programs, because meeting the Idle family really opened my eyes and changed my perspective on life, and I would always forever keep the lessons that I learned in Somalia in my heart.
